Daddy

Raymond Lewis Brown, PhD

Oct 6, 1954 - Dec 8, 2018

Service Jan 12, 2019

In honor of the man who gave me life. This past Saturday [1/12/19] we came together to celebrate the life of my father; The Trekkie, The Collector, & The Quiet Catalyst 1954-2018

I may have more to say about my father in time - but for now, this is what I’ve got. I love and miss him madly.

FATHERS DAY 2019

Those of you that are in the know KNOW that this is one helluva Father’s Day for me.
.
When I was 5yrs old RLB unexpectedly became a single Dad (that’s another story). He was Dr. Dad, an expert at 30min meals, my surrogate mother, my Santa & a fount of knowledge until I was 13. He took me around the world with him expanding my concepts & appreciation of culture, language, art, & nature. Then, circumstances dictated that I leave him & this lifestyle, sooner than I wanted (again, another story).
.
His travels abroad continued as he supported my h.s. education in the US. From then on our times together were brief bursts of emotionally charged togetherness while we strove to make better of ourselves in each other’s absence.
.
Once I hit 18, I already had years of experience being on my own. The independence and maturity he fostered in me were impossible to mask and those qualities buoyed me as I got myself through college to then pursue an artist’s life in NYC.
.
All the while, he excelled as a foreign service diplomat serving his country, as well as the local communities, in fervent high esteem.
.
From afar, we marveled at each other’s abilities.
.
Graduations, weddings, family reunions, and the occasional Christmas became our crossroads. We saw each other so infrequently. Still, the love remained.
.
Recently, he left this world - much too soon! The void is ever palpable. All the world’s a stage, & Daddy played many many parts. His acts did not amount to the bard’s seven ages, so my heart aches for such a vibrant life cut short so soon. Alas, The Fates are indiscriminate.
.
I can only hope that he has a better vantage point from which to witness my sojourn on this earth. To see the joy I manifest as I achieve milestones I previously never thought possible.
.
I’ve been perpetually proud of him and I’ll continue to grow and bask in his pride for me.
.
I love you Daddy. How cool is Vi Moradi?!! You’ve got the best seat in the house. So, I hope you enjoy the show.

Say hi to Ma for me.

Paddy Crean - International Order of the Sword & Pen

In December I attended the Paddy Crean workshop in beautiful Banff, Canada. What a glorious experience to train and learn in the mountains of this beautiful town as I grapple with the death of my father. I even taught my first rope dart class!

It was a phenomenal & edifying reprieve to the loss that continues to weigh on my heart.

*Highly recommend. Two thumbs up. Do it.

PASSENGER LIST, Planoply podcast propels through Podcon

Passenger list - lauren shippen.jpg

Lauren Shippen, the writer & creator of The Bright Sessions, is co-producing and co-directing a mystery thriller podcast with John Scott Dryden & Planoply called PASSENGER LIST starring Kelly Marie Tran (from Star Wars Episode VIII; The Last Jedi)!!  She asked me to join the team, and you won't believe the wonderful places this story goes.

“Passenger List” is loosely inspired by the disappearance of the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.  According to Dryden, this is a mashup of an Agatha Christie whodunit with a political thriller. Kelly Marie Tran plays a woman who lost her twin brother on the plane and decides to unofficially investigate. As she digs into each passenger’s story, the outlines of a global conspiracy emerge, permitting the story to circle around current issues as wide-ranging as Islamophobia and Russian election interference.

This podcast is currently in production, but I just wanted you all to know that it's worth keeping on your radar.

Magic Leap

Performance Capture, meet spatial computing.

At L.E.A.P.CON I had the pleasure of working with Andy Serkis (Gollum of Lord of the Rings, and Caesar from Planet of the Apes). His U.K.-based motion capture house, The Imaginarium Studios, brought me in for the demo of their creative partnership with Rony Abovitz's Magic Leap, which superimposes 3D computer generated imagery over everyday real world objects.

Together they are exploring the world of Mixed Reality by blending real world performance art with augmented reality by virtue of Serkis' CG orc-like character, Grishneck.  Technology is finally able to leap from off of our screens and occupy three dimensional space in our homes.

The world of spatial computing is evolving, and I feel so charmed to be a part of that growth.

According to the Hollywood Reporter;
While the technology is still in a fledgling stage, Serkis expressed enthusiasm for the potential of augmented/mixed reality. “We now have a new way of experiencing story,” he says. “It’s the next generation of theater/cinema/event that we’ve been circling around for some time, and it’s finally emerging."

Says Serkis: “As an actor, the process of creating a role emotionally, psychologically and physically, that will live in a mixed reality environment is no different to any other sphere of storytelling. The only exception being that your performance can live on in so many different iterations, which are yet to be decided. However, as a director capturing a performance for Magic Leap content is fascinating because you are offering up the story and yet the end user has total freedom as to how they will experience it spatially. It is entirely different to capturing for a movie, where you obviously have control over every aspect of the viewer's experience.”

The Imaginarium Studios and Magic Leap have partnered to change the way people experience entertainment by capturing the magic of performance for spatial computing.

...maybe.  There's also the possibility that my part was left on the cutting room floor.  I don't know, do you?  We should probably go see The Oath the weekend of Oct 12th, 2018 and find out.  If you don't see m'face onscreen, then photograph my name as it scrolls through the credits.  ;-)

This sort of thing happens sometimes. it doesn’t stop the fact that I still had a fantastic time meeting Ike, seeing old friends, & working on this set.

Dead Girls' Detective Agency

The Dead Girls Detective Agency is a who done it, coming-of-age love story about a young Manhattanite who wakes up in a glamorous hotel to discover that she’s dead, apparently in purgatory. Her only hope of passing to the other side may be in solving the mystery of her own murder with the help of others like herself.

This initiative stems from the Insurrection and HarperCollins book-to-tv partnership where key books are optioned and developed into digital video and linear television series.

Digital TV studio Insurrection Media and Keshet Studios have teamed to co-produce paranormal YA drama The Dead Girls Detective Agency based on the HarperCollins book written by Suzy Cox. TV writing team Jerica Lieberman and Molly Margraf (Mistresses) will pen the adaptation for the pilot.

The Bright Sessions - Episode #51 - Director Wadsworth

“Alex Marshall-Brown’s performance as The Bright Sessions‘s Agent Wadsworth is sharp, quick, cold, and collected. Marshall-Brown makes it clear to the listener why Dr. Bright would be intrigued by Wadsworth; she also makes it clear why Dr. Bright would understand what a threat Wadsworth is. Marshall-Brown fits seamlessly into the Bright Sessionscast while rooting the show more wholly into its more ominous undercurrents.”

— 2017's Best in Podcasts, Podcast Problems

In case you didn't know. I am Director Wadsworth.

It is my strange and unusual day that we cover after Rose's cataclysmic 50th Episode musical-dream-walking debacle.

Let's get back to the gritty of The Bright Sessions, people!

The team of The Bright Sessions 50th Episode takes you behind the scenes of our highly anticipated musical episode. Directed by Jon Sams.

I'm amazed by the talent & commitment of The Bright Sessions fans. There's some great fan art, episode listening parties (in both the US & Europe), as well as Discord forums (for Patreon members) to discuss their shared experiences online.  Below are some really cool pieces of art & opinion shared by some of The Bright Session fans.  Of course, I favor the views which highlight my villainous character.   The diversity of opinion & artistic stylings of our fans really moves me.

Tumblr Artist contributors;

I'm sooooo excited by all the Wadsworth art that exists out there! I'd love to see more.

Dancing with Girls is about the solidarity of female friendship
— Anjulie - Songwriter

I'm happily heartbroken in the name of Canadian pop star, Anjulie, whose music remains timely & powerful.

'Dancing With Girls' was release on March 1st of this year, in conjunction with International Women's Day.  I'm lucky.  I'm an intersectional woman born into the privilege of a life traveling the globe.  I've had the great fortune to live abroad for the entirety of my childhood, so I cultivated an awareness of the interconnectivity of people, regardless of race or culture.  We are creatures of Community, and I'm so impressed by how Anjulie makes that concept so easily accessible in her music.

It was a pleasure to collaborate with these smart & driven feminist creators.

How I'mma be a skater Girl?

Gleefully.

I've gotta admit guys, I got my motorcycle license around the same time that I bought myself a longboard for Birthmas - and I'm addicted to this BOAAARD! Once I got my soul-bound crosstown swell-hound, I proceeded to avoid death on multiple occasions. More often than not, Death awaits navigating either steep declines, or a mere crack in the sidewalk.  Other times, one can draw blood from a poorly executed pivot.  This longboard has been the grim reaper's worst nightmare & GIVES ME LYFE!!  It's every escapist fantasy I've ever dreamed of.

My new best friend is this slab of wood! - and we GO places!

We've gone to Venice to skate the boardwalk.  Once, we skated to a different coffee spot each morning.  We're dating.  I love her.  He's dope - we're fluid.

Bruce Lee taught us best, 'Be Like Water.'  Now...I can surf the land!  The containers may keep changing, but I ride the wave, I ebb, I flow, & I embrace my expanse.

HARMONIA

This woman is my Cuban American visionary source of creative inspiration.  Challenge yourself.  Find artists that inspire you to CREATE & BE someone you never saw for yourself.

B.I.T.C.H.

Black Imaginary To Counter Hegemony

Harmonia makes a point of replacing the white male figures (the most represented) with people she believes have been the least represented. By con-temporizing the meaning behind these iconic paintings we can begin to recondition our minds to accept new concepts of human value.

This Afro-Cuban is representing black women in classical art.
